Captions to transcript

Turn a caption file into readable paragraphs for show notes, a blog post or a newsletter. Free, and nothing leaves your browser.

Updated 25 October 2026

Your file stays in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

2. Options

Long stretches without a pause are split at the end of a sentence, and a speaker change (>>) starts a new paragraph.

From captions to paragraphs

Caption files are cut into two-line pieces for the screen. This joins them back into prose: a pause in the speech starts a new paragraph, long stretches are split at the end of a sentence, a speaker change (>>) starts a new paragraph, and sounds like [Music] can be left out. Add timestamps for show notes, or leave them off for a blog post.

Let CaptionMe do it for every upload

CaptionMe transcribes every new upload on your channel automatically, with names spelled from your title and description, and labels who's speaking in podcasts and interviews. See plans or how it works.

Questions

How do I get a transcript of a YouTube video?

Download its caption file (from YouTube Studio for your own videos) and open it here. Auto-generated captions work, but contain more mistakes than captions you've reviewed.

Can it keep timestamps?

Yes: tick the timestamp option and each paragraph starts with the time it begins, handy for show notes.

Which caption formats work?

SRT, WebVTT, SBV, ASS/SSA and YouTube timed text.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It's turned into text in your browser.
